GKN 2023

Diploma Program Chemistry Year 1 students had an opportunity to get some hands on experience while visiting the GKN Hoeganaes Innovation Center for Powder Metals in Cinnaminson, NJ.  Students worked with various types of equipment to determine carbon content & alloying elements, and strength, hardness & density of 2 powder metals to help them determine which would be best to use in a 3D powder metal printer.  Students also used an electron microscope to magnify powder particles to examine size, shape, dimension & smoothness to determine flow through the 3D printer to help them make their choice.  Students also learned about the centers latest work on the creation of magnetic powder to help power electric vehicles and storing hydrogen energy in powder metal as a sustainable alternative energy source.
