Congratulations to grades K-3! All students grew in their skills in math, reading, and in their PAWS citizenship skills. A special congratulations to these students who grew the most in their homerooms! We are proud of all of our students this year for their hard word and perseverance.
We had our final community meetings for grades 4-6 this week! We reflected about our school-wide goals of following PAWS expectations, especially during lunch and recess, and making academic progress. We recognized students for their outstanding growth in Reading and Math and for their positive contributions to our school community. We are so proud of all the students and how hard they have worked to achieve their goals this year. Way to go!
As a fun end of the year culminating Science project, 6th grade students planned, designed, and built protective devices in an attempt to shield an egg from the impact of gravity when dropped from increasing heights. The first round of “The Egg Drop” is from a ladder, the second is from the roof of the school, and the third and final round is from the fire truck ladder! Approximately 45 students created projects that survived all 3 rounds this year! Great job to everyone for all your effort, and a huge “Thank you” to the Bensalem Fire Department for their help with this exciting event!
We had a wonderful 5th grade DARE graduation ceremony this morning! We heard the DARE essay winners read a part of their essay and celebrated a student from each homeroom who demonstrates the DARE decision making model. All 5th grade students completed the 10 sessions of DARE and received certificates to celebrate their participation in the program. We are proud and grateful to be have the DARE program at SLCS. Thank you to the community representatives who attended the ceremony today, the Bensalem Police Department, and Detective Oliverio, our dedicated DARE officer. Congratulations to the SLCS Girls on the Run team! The end of season celebration 5K race took place this morning at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. It was a beautiful day to run and all the runners (and running buddies) did a fantastic job! The student runners worked hard this season to build up their endurance with the goal of running 3.1 miles. Great job!
Last night we hosted a very exciting 5th Grade Environmental Rainforest Exhibition. The students did a fantastic job presenting the prototypes they created in Design Technology to solve an environmental issue, and their rainforest narrative stories. There was a beautiful mural to reflect all the biodiversity in the rainforest with environmental research and facts about various plants and animals. The students also created outstanding nature silhouettes in Art class that were auctioned off to the highest bidder. We raised a total of $574 to donate to the Tree Foundation! Aaliyah Booker, a speaker from the Children’s Craniofacial Association, came to speak to our 6th grade students. She shared her personal story about how she has undergone surgeries and overcome many challenges, including being excluding and made to feel different and judged, as a result of being born with Goldenhar Syndrome. Students made connections to the book, Wonder, that they read earlier this year and their current research project about genetic disorders in Science. Instead of letting others put her down and influence her identity, she made the choice to use her differences as her power. She spoke specifically about how we are all different for a reason and embracing our unique gifts and talents. Her story is inspirational and her message about celebrating differences is important for everyone to hear.
Mr. McGowan, a Civil War Reenactor, came to visit our 5th grade students again this year! He shared facts and showed off authentic clothing, artillery, and equipment from Civil War troops. Seeing the items and hearing the stories help students better understand what life was like for the soldiers during this time, and some teachers even got to try the uniforms on! His presentation brings what students have been learning about in the Civil War unit in Social Studies to life. Our school community has been collecting donations for Fostering Hope Lower Bucks. As a culminating community impact project in I&S, 6th grade students shared messages and sorted and packaged the donations. A representative from the organization came to speak to the students and say thank you. They were able to open a free shop for the foster families as result of our community impact project. Great job SLCS!
5th grade students had an exciting day at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ yesterday. They explored all the different aquatic animal exhibits, walked the shark bridge, felt stingrays and starfish, and a lot more! The 6th grade students had a fantastic time at the Maryland Science Center today! The students attended a planetarium show and learned all about the stars during different seasons and made connections to Greek mythology. They explored exhibits at the museum about topics like power and electricity, space, health, and dinosaurs. We are grateful that the weather cooperated so students could spent time outside and play in the playground and the inner harbor area. It was a great day! We had a fantastic time at the 5th and 6th grade SLCS dance Friday night! It was a night with great music, dancing, a photo booth, and delicious pizza. A memorable moment was when some of our 6th grade leaders passed the baton to 5th graders and gave a speech about what it means to be the leaders of the school. The concert band students performed a wonderful concert on Thursday evening, showcasing their impressive skills. Many of the students in concert band have been studying with Mrs. Windle for the past few years and their dedication and effort was reflected in the performance. There was also an assembly for younger students today where the concert band students were able to perform for their peers. We are all so impressed and proud of their accomplishments! Great job musicians and a huge thank you to Mrs. Windle for an outstanding instrumental program!
6th grade students are busy with their community impact project as part of their I&S class. Some of the 6th graders are visiting classrooms in the mornings to talk about our project to the other students. Others are collecting, sorting and packing the donations brought in by students and families at the elementary campus. SLCS sixth graders recently participated in several rounds of the Sixth Grade Spelling Bee in culmination of their studies in spelling and foundational English skills. Yesterday afternoon the finalists from each homeroom were supported by their classmates as they were challenged with Scripps National Spelling Bee’s “Words of the Champions” in the final round of the Spelling Bee. It is always an exciting event! Congratulations to all of our participants who showed off their spelling prowess!
We are proud to share that one of our 6th grade students was honored at this year’s Young Writer’s Award ceremony hosted by the international organization of women educators, Alpha Delta Kappa. He read his honorable mention composition which described his ability to play piano as his super power, and shared a beautiful recording of himself playing “Solfeggietto” composed by C. P. E. Bach at the ceremony. Congratulations!
The 4th grade students did a fantastic job hosting their "Colonial Job Fair" where they tried to persuade the audience to join their trade! They shared interesting facts and details about what they did during Colonial Times to make a living. Students presenting their research and many even dressed the part!
